Cricket World Cup 2023: South Africa scored the greatest World Cup total of 428 runs when Aiden Makram scored the fastest tournament hundred at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi to shock Sri Lanka, who struggled to control the ball.
A record 754 runs were scored in the game, despite Sri Lanka's valiant efforts. Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, and Rassie van der Dussen each made hundreds for South Africa, which posted the best World Cup total of 428.
As they started their World Cup campaign in New Delhi, South Africa carried on from where they left off in their victory over Australia in the ODI series, showing off their batting prowess and issuing a warning to the other nations. Records were changed on Saturday when South Africa scored 428 runs against Sri Lanka, defeating them by a margin of xx runs.
After a fantastic onslaught from Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, captain Dasun Shanaka, and Kasun Rajitha produced useful knocks, Sri Lanka did well to prevent damage to their Net Run Rate. Although South Africa rode on three centurions to achieve the biggest total in World Cup history, surpassing Australia's 417, they were never in the race throughout the chase.
MARKRAM LEADS RECORD-BREAKING DAY
On a scorching Delhi afternoon, Dasun Shanaka gave South Africa the chance to bat, but their captain Temba Bavuma was dismissed in the first over. Van der Dussen and Qde Kock, playing in his final ODI World Cup, put on a display with a 204-run stand for the second wicket.
Due to Sri Lanka's weak bowling lineup and inability to respond, both batsmen ended up scoring hundreds of runs. Aiden Markram raised the bar as Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen each hit 100 in 84 balls and 108 in 110 balls, respectively. The T20I captain entered the field in the 31st over and completed his century with a score of 106 off just 54 balls.
