PSG returns to winning ways in Ligue 1 with a victory at Rennes, and Marseille defeats Le Havre.

To hand Rennes its first loss of the year, goals from midfielder Vitinha, right defender Achraf Hakimi, and striker Randal Kolo Muani were scored. With the win, PSG matched Brest in points and moved up to third place on goal differential.

The defending champion Paris Saint-Germain improved to third place in the French league on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Rennes.

To hand Rennes its first loss of the year, goals from midfielder Vitinha, right defender Achraf Hakimi, and striker Randal Kolo Muani were scored. After eight rounds of play, PSG is now tied on points with Brest and is third on goal differential, two points behind leader Monaco. Rennes fell to seventh place.

Newcastle thrashed PSG 4-1 in the Champions League midweek after the team had drawn 0-0 with Clermont in its previous match.

Rennes got off to a strong start, and PSG's trepidation was clear as Gianluigi Donnarumma expertly stopped Arnaud Kalimuendo's powerful attempt in the sixth minute.

In the 32nd minute, Vitinha scored a goal for PSG from the left side of the penalty area, and four minutes later, Hakimi made it 2-0 to put the game out of PSG's reach.

Rennes took advantage of PSG's defensive frailties in the 56th minute as forward Amine Gouiri outran central defender Milan Kriniar far too easily and defeated Donnarumma. In the 58th minute, Kolo Muani came off the bench and converted Hakimi's ball to give PSG a two-goal advantage.

With the goal at his mercy late in the game, PSG sensation Mbappé, who leads the league in scoring with seven goals, missed his effort.

Earlier, Marseille defeated 10-man Le Havre 3-0 at home to improve to sixth position under Gennaro Gattuso's leadership. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first league goal for the team.

After Marcelino resigned due to conflict between the club's management and fans, Gattuso, a former midfielder for both Italy and AC Milan, assumed leadership.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal striker Aubameyang scored three minutes later with a clip over the custodian after being set up by Moroccan midfielder Amine Harit. This came after central defender Arouna Sangante's own goal in the 18th minute as a result of midfielder Iliman Ndiaye's pass.

Rassoul Ndiaye, a midfielder for Le Havre, was dismissed in the 40th minute for receiving a second yellow card, and in the 84th, Aubameyang broke down the right before setting up Ismaila Sarr.

Meanwhile, Brest earned a 1-1 draw against Toulouse at home thanks to a goal from forward Martin Satriano in the third minute of stoppage time. Toulouse had taken the lead with forward Franck Magri's goal in the first half. Reims sits in fifth place, two points behind fourth-place Brest.

Other match

When Italy won the 2006 World Cup, Fabio Grosso and Gattuso were teammates. Fabio Grosso entered the French league under identical circumstances, taking over as Lyon's manager when Laurent Blanc was fired.

However, he has yet to record a victory, as his team wasted a 3-1 lead in a 3-3 home tie with Lorient.

While 17-year-old midfielder Eli Junior Kroupi scored twice for the visitors, veteran striker Alexandre Lacazette scored twice for Lyon. With three points from eight games, Lyon sits in 17th position, one point ahead of last-place Clermont.

When the game was called off in stoppage time against Montpellier, Clermont was down 4-2 and Mory Diaw, the goalie for Clermont, had just received treatment before being carried off on a stretcher.

It was unclear whether Montpellier would receive the victory from the French league.

In their Northern Derby, Lens and seventh-place Lille drew 1-1 at home.

The only team currently unbeaten is Nice, who are in second position.
