Trent Boult of New Zealand is eager for a third shot at the 50-over World Cup after suffering heartbreaking losses in the previous two finals and taking a year off from One-Day International cricket.
One of the top ODI bowlers in the world, the 34-year-old has been out of the Black Caps' lineup for the past year after declining a contract with New Zealand Cricket to play for lucrative Twenty20 clubs in Australia, the United States, and India.
Boult took a risk by delaying his international career to spend more time with his young family, but after agreeing to a casual playing contract with New Zealand cricket officials, he is now a contender for the ODI World Cup in October.
I completely understood that by returning my contract, you were making room for other players, he remarked. "The choice was made primarily due to my frequent travel. Never was a World Cup selection assured. I had to strive for it, so being here makes me very happy.
Boult is optimistic that New Zealand's Black Caps will perform well in India, "like we have in the last couple of attempts," as they aim to make it to a third straight final.
Since making his comeback to international cricket in early September, he has been on fire, claiming eight wickets in two ODI losses to England.
Putting back in the black ODI kit was satisfying, he remarked. "I eagerly anticipate more."
Boult played a significant role in New Zealand's progress to the last two finals, where it fell short against Australia in 2015 in Melbourne and England in 2014 at Lords.
Finals heart-break
With a wry chuckle, he remarked, "I've been very lucky to play in a few World Cup finals and been on the losing side of all of them.
"I know it's cliche, but you learn more from failure than success. Because of that experience, I believe I am a better cricket player.
His 22 wickets at the 2015 event were a tie for the most with Mitchell Starc, an Australian quick. In the championship match against Australia, they fell short by seven wickets.
The 2019 final loss to England, who they will face in their opening match of this year's tournament, is not something that New Zealand cricket fans need to be reminded of.
Boult tripped over the boundary rope while trying to catch Ben Stokes as England was battling to score the final few runs. Stokes then led the home team to victory in a thrilling Super Over.
"I didn't know where the boundary was, and that was a crucial mistake," Boult said of the error.
Boult continued, "It was a strange game to be a part of. I make an effort not to reflect on it.
But he received a sobering reminder when Boult's first game back for the Black Caps earlier this month in the opener ODI against England was replayed and shown in Southampton.
Still difficult to let go of. When I returned to play for New Zealand after a year away and there was a weather delay and the only game showing on the television at the stadium (was the 2019 final), that was probably a little harder for me, he said.
Of course, past results cannot be changed, so Boult is focused on the future in the hopes that this will be his third opportunity to succeed.
In a couple of weeks, he stated, "I'm looking forward to hopefully getting one more run and lifting the trophy." "That's the main thing we're concentrating on,"
