The defeat worsens Ajax's predicament, as the four-time European champion is off to its worst start in the Dutch premier division since 1964–1955.
The situation at Dutch powerhouse Ajax deteriorated on Wednesday when bitter rivals Feyenoord added insult to injury by winning 4-0 in a match that had to be postponed due to crowd disturbances.
Striker Santiago Gimenez of Feyenoord completed his hat-trick just four minutes after the action was resumed at 55 minutes, when Sunday's match was abandoned due to flares thrown into the pitch by Ajax supporters with its rival leading 3-0.
Between Gimenez's second and third goals, which really came after nearly three days had passed, there was a goalmouth scramble, and he bundled in after it at a Johan Cruyff arena with no spectators.
The defeat deepens Ajax's dilemma, as the four-time European champion is off to its worst start in the Dutch top division since 1964–1955, when its legendary legend Cruyff was still playing for the youth squad.
Ajax is in uncharted situation after five games, sitting in 14th place in the Eredivisie, two points above the relegation zone, and ten points behind the league's early leader PSV Eindhoven.
Ajax's problems persist off the pitch as well. Just hours after violent incidents at the stadium on Sunday, the club fired Sven Mislintat as director of football.
Home fans and mounted riot police engaged in continuous combat, forcing the riot police to use tear gas to disperse the gathering. While some spectators attempted to break through the stadium's glass doors, the players and officials were confined in their locker rooms for their own safety.
A third party was looking into Mislintat for a potential conflict of interest with the last-minute signing of Croatian international defender Borna Sosa from VfB Stuttgart, where he had previously served as sporting director, in the summer.
The organisation cited "the lack of broad support within the organisation" as the rationale for the decision, and disputed that the dismissal had anything to do with the investigation.
