The women's Spanish squad declines to play unless Rubiales is dismissed

Rubiales refused to quit earlier on Friday, fuelling anger among players and government ministers who decried his actions as unacceptable misogynist behaviour.

As a result of the incident surrounding football federation president Luis Rubiales kissing midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain won the World Cup, dozens of members of the Spanish women's national team declared on Friday that they would not compete for their nation unless Rubiales was fired.

Earlier on Friday, Rubiales resisted leaving, which enraged players and government ministers who denounced his acts as unacceptable misogynistic behaviour.

56 players, including Hermoso and the whole cup-winning squad of 23, signed a unified statement that was submitted through their FUTPRO union calling for the federation leadership to be fired.
