Before the 2023 season of the competition, the Caribbean Premier League's (CPL) operations director Micheal Hall made a number of rule modifications public. These adjustments included harsh sanctions for both bowling and batting sides for time-wasting. The batting team will incur a penalty of five runs if they take too long, but bowling teams will be heavily penalised if they don't keep the over pace.
The new rule introduced says that if the bowling is behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, they will have to keep five fielders inside the 30-yard circle. If they fall behind the over rate at the start of the 19th over, six fielders will have to be inside the circle.
Additionally, there will be a red card situation if the bowling team is behind the over rate at the start of the last over, in which case the captain will have to remove one of his or her players from the field and bowl with six fielders inside the circle.
In announcing the rule change, Michael Hall stated, "We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend."
