One of the biggest athletic calamities in history occurred at the Kanjuruhan stadium in Malang. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of 43 children and the injury of 580 people.
Persebaya Surabaya defeated Arema Malang 3-2 on October 1 in front of around 42,000 people. Following the incident, police fired tear gas, including towards the stadium's stands, which sparked panic among the fans.
For the Saturday night game, Athok had purchased four tickets for his two daughters, his ex-wife, and her new spouse. Naila Debi Anggraini, his 13-year-old daughter, made the last-minute decision to move home with her family. Along with her mother Geby Asta Putri, 37, and their older sister Natasya Debi Ramadani, 16, she perished in the crush.
In the year since the tragedy, Indonesia has found guilty five of the six suspects who were accused of causing the deaths of 135 people through negligence. The Indonesian President Joko Widodo's independent team and the police have both conducted investigations.
