Southee is able to re-join the New Zealand team following surgery and is planning to start as the opener.

Earlier this month, while playing against England in a one-day international, Southee cracked and dislocated his thumb while attempting to take a catch.

Tim Southee will be part of New Zealand’s squad at next month’s World Cup after progressing in his recovery from a thumb injury, the country’s cricket board (NZC) said on Tuesday, adding that Kyle Jamieson would travel to India as a “contingency”.  Fast bowler Southee dislocated and fractured his thumb attempting to take a catch in a one-day international against England earlier this month. He had surgery on Thursday. The New Zealand cricket board (NZC) announced on Tuesday that Tim Southee will represent New Zealand in the World Cup later this month after making progress in his recovery from a thumb injury. Kyle Jamieson will also go to India as a "contingency."

In an ODI against England earlier this month, fast bowler Southee attempted to take a catch and dislocated and fractured his thumb. Thursday saw his procedure.

In their opening match of the 50-over World Cup in India, New Zealand will take on the reigning champion England.

Tim Southee has been given the all-clear to travel to India with the Black Caps later this week as his recovery from surgery on his fractured right thumb continues, according to a statement from NZC.

In an effort to be available for the Black Caps' World Cup opener against England, the 34-year-old senior paceman will fly out to the ICC Cricket World Cup on Saturday.

In case of need, pace-bowler Kyle Jamieson will also practise with the World Cup team this week in India. Jamieson won't formally be a member of the World Cup roster and won't be able to participate in any of the exhibition games.

A second-string New Zealand team won a three-match ODI series in Bangladesh on Thursday.
