India's taekwondo campaign at the Asian Games came to an end on Wednesday as Shivansh Tyagi and Margerette Maria Regi were eliminated. In the men's 80 kg round of 32, Tyagi got off to a good start by defeating Cambodian Mithona Va 2-0 (3-3, 8-5) to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.
The 24-year-old, however, was unable to perform at his peak once more, losing 0-2 (6-15, 1-15) to Woohyeok Park of South Korea in the round of 16. Maria was defeated by Taiwan's Jui En Chang in the women's 67kg round of 16 by a score of 0-2 (4-9, 3-13).
The Indian athletes received last-minute approval to visit China and departed for Hangzhou on Monday night. In taekwondo, India has only ever won one medal, which was Surendra Bhandari's bronze in the 57 kg division in Busan in 2002.
