Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic won the Diamond League with a best throw of 84.24 metres, which came on his final try.
The recently crowned world champion received a no throw after failing to start on his first attempt. His second attempt, when he landed the javelin at 83.80 metres, was his greatest effort.
With a throw of 84.01 metres, the Czech athlete—who also won the bronze medal at the World Championships this year—took the lead right away. He made a grand exit by increasing the distance on the last try.
In addition to competing for the lead, Oliver Helander of Finland, who was in third place, put pressure on Chopra. Just six centimetres separated Helander's best—83.74m—from the Indian record.
With the Asian Games starting on September 23 in Hangzhou, Chopra will now be competing.
