Maddy Cusack, a midfielder for Sheffield United Women, has passed away at the age of 27, the Women's Championship team announced on Thursday.
After joining the team in 2019, Cusack made 100 appearances for the organisation last season. She was a marketing executive at the club's Bramall Lane offices as well.
Stephen Bettis, the club's chief executive officer, said: "This is heartbreaking news for everyone."
Maddy was well-liked by everyone she interacted with and enjoyed the unique position of being a part of several teams at Sheffield United.
She was a credit to her family because of her personality and professionalism, and she will be sorely missed.
In July, Cusack extended his deal with the team to a sixth season.
The club withheld information on the death's cause.
