Rubiales was accused of sexual assault and coercion last week after a Spanish prosecutor complained to the High Court about an allegedly unwanted kiss he gave Jenni Hermoso's lips.
After three weeks of controversy over claims that he gave a player on the women's national team an uninvited kiss as they celebrated their World Cup victory last month, Luis Rubiales, the head of the Spanish Football Federation, resigned from his position on Sunday.
In a statement, Rubiales stated that his position had become untenable. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) later confirmed that Rubiales had handed a letter of resignation to acting president Pedro Rocha.
His kiss of athlete Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup victory in Sydney on August 20 sparked indignation among athletes, officials, and many in the larger Spanish culture, raising concerns about sexism in sports.
His decision to leave was motivated by recent setbacks to his standing.
