A hint for his inclusion in World Cup 2023 as well.
- Brook called up after shoulder injury to Jonny Bairstow
- Batter given chance to play his way into World Cup contention
With Jonny Bairstow suffering a minor shoulder injury in the final Twenty20 match against the same opponents on Tuesday, Harry Brook has been added to England's squad for the one-day international series against New Zealand, giving him four more chances to earn a spot in the World Cup roster before the squad is announced on September 28. Additionally, he and seamer Brydon Carse will be the only players from both categories in the side for the three one-day internationals against Ireland.
There will be some trimming to be done when it is finished because Brook and Carse were later added to the squad, which originally included 15 players and was presented as England's final World Cup selection. Many of the additional dozen players Brook has recruited to the team for the match against Ireland will also be hoping they have a chance to snag a last-minute spot on the flight to India, which is slated to leave on September 27, the day after their final match.
The team to play Ireland has a different look than usual because the majority of England's first-choice selection are due to take a few days break before they go for the World Cup. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who both started for England in Test matches, will serve as captain and vice-captain of the team, respectively. Crawley is captaining the team despite having only played three ODIs in 2021, all of which were played over the course of five days.
Three uncapped players have been called up: Sam Hain, a 28-year-old Warwickshire hitter; George Scrimshaw, a 25-year-old seamer who will join Northamptonshire at the end of the season; and Jamie Smith, a tremendously prospective Surrey wicketkeeper-batter. Hain currently ranks second all-time among players who have played at least 50 senior 50-over matches, only behind Ruturaj Gaikwad, the 26-year-old who was left off of India's tentative World Cup roster. Hain's average in all senior 50-over games is 57.96.
The 23-year-old Smith has not participated in a 50-over game since 2021, despite leading table-topping Surrey in scoring this season with 729 runs at an average of 42.88. The final two County Championship games of the season, at home against Northants and away against Hampshire, are likely to be played without him and his county partner Will Jacks. There are no players for Essex, who is second in the standings.
Before making a decision, the England and Wales Cricket Board said its selection panel talked to counties "and considered their ambitions in the run-up to the end of the County Championship season."
